Lithuania plans opening embassy in Brazil

Lithuania is preparing to strengthen its diplomatic presence in South America with plans to open an embassy in Brazil this October. A draft resolution outlining the initiative was registered on Monday, marking a significant step toward expanding Lithuania’s engagement with Latin America’s largest economy.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the initial costs for establishing and operating the new mission—estimated at around 430,000 euros—will be covered from existing budget resources. Once fully operational, the embassy in Brasilia is projected to require 2 million euros in 2027 and 1.7 million euros in 2028, reflecting Lithuania’s long‑term commitment to deepening bilateral ties.

The proposal still awaits final approval from the government, yet political support has already been voiced. In April, the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs endorsed the move, highlighting Brazil’s growing relevance for Lithuania’s diplomatic, economic, and cultural outreach.

Lithuania currently maintains a consulate general in São Paulo, which has served as the country’s primary representation in Brazil. The planned embassy in the capital is expected to enhance political dialogue, support Lithuanian businesses exploring opportunities in the region, and provide broader consular services for citizens.
