The Estonian people won their independence from the Russian Empire in fierce battles from 1917 to 1920.

The most significant day during this time is considered to be February 24, 1918, when Estonia declared its national independence and which is still celebrated as the country's Independence Day.

Every year, February 24 is celebrated with magnificent fireworks, concerts, parades of the defense forces and a presidential address.

Estonia has a population of 1.3 million. Approximately one third of the population lives in the capital, Tallinn. Other major cities include the student city of Tartu, the industrial border town of Narva and the "summer capital" of Pärnu.

The core nation of Estonia is the Estonians (a little more than two-thirds), who are one of the Baltic Finnic-speaking peoples, similar to the Livonians, Finns, Vots, Karelians, and Sami.
