«airBaltic» Celebrates 30 Years of Connecting Riga and Tallinn

At the beginning of 2026, the Latvian airline airBaltic marks 30 years of operations on the route between its home base, Riga and its base in Tallinn. The first airBaltic flight from the Latvian capital to the Estonian capital took place on January 30, 1996, thus marking an important milestone in the airline’s early network development and strengthening air connectivity within the Baltics and between Estonia and the wider region.

Mantas Vrubliauskas, Vice President Network Management at airBaltic: “For three decades, our operations between the two capitals have contributed to stronger connectivity for Estonia, supporting both business and leisure travel. Over the years, airBaltic has steadily grown its presence in Tallinn, and today we offer a strong and competitive network of direct routes from the city. As the leading airline in the Baltic region, we remain committed to providing reliable connectivity for our passengers while continuing to explore new opportunities to further strengthen links across the Baltics. We also extend sincere thanks to our long-standing partners, RIX Riga Airport and Tallinn Airport, for their continued cooperation and support in airBaltic’s development.”

Laila Odiņa, Chairman of the Board of RIX Riga Airport: “The growth of Riga Airport as the leading transit hub in the Baltics is closely linked to the national carrier airBaltic. For 30 years, the Riga–Tallinn route has provided Estonian travellers with convenient access to an extensive network of connections from Riga to business and leisure destinations across Europe and beyond. It also serves as a convenient transit point for passengers wishing to explore the Baltic region.”

Eero Pärgmäe, member of the Tallinn Airport Board: “From a single route to Riga to nearly 30 direct destinations today, airBaltic has played a key role in strengthening Tallinn Airport’s connectivity over the past 30 years. During this time, 7.6 million passengers have travelled with airBaltic to and from Estonia, reflecting the airline’s importance for our country’s connectivity and mobility. We highly value this long-term partnership and thank airBaltic for the excellent cooperation in connecting Estonia with Europe and beyond.”

Currently, airBaltic operates up to five daily flights between Riga and Tallinn at convenient times, offering passengers flexible travel options between the two cities as well as seamless connections via the Latvian capital across the airline’s network.

Over the past three decades, airBaltic has grown into a key carrier in the Estonian market. In 2025 alone, more than 290 thousand passengers travelled with airBaltic between Riga and Tallinn. Over the past 30 years, airBaltic has operated nearly 68 thousands flights and carried over 3.5 million passengers on the Riga–Tallinn route.

In 2026, airBaltic is connecting Tallinn with 29 routes, basing four aircraft at Tallinn Airport and providing direct flights to a wide range of destinations, including Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Berlin, Billund, Brussels, Burgas, Funchal, Geneva, Gran Canaria, Hamburg, Heraklion, Copenhagen, London, Málaga, Malta, Munich, Nice, Oslo, Palma de Mallorca, Paris, Rhodes, Riga, Salzburg, Split, Tenerife, Tirana, Vienna, and Vilnius.

airBaltic is the largest airline in the Baltics, operating one of Europe’s youngest fleets with currently 52 Airbus A220-300 aircraft. Committed to providing passengers with a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience, the airline is the first European carrier to offer free high-speed SpaceX Starlink internet on its flights, with plans to equip its entire fleet. In addition, airBaltic offers both Economy and Business Class on all scheduled flights, allowing customers to choose the option that best suits their travel needs.

Over the past 30 years, airBaltic has evolved into a globally respected carrier. Now the airline is connecting the Baltic States to 80 destinations across Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and the Caucasus region, providing essential infrastructure and global connectivity for the region.
