On November 15, from 12:00 to 16:00, Pāvilosta will once again host the annual “Lamprey Day” – the most delicious event of November in South Kurzeme. Now in its seventh year, this celebration has become a beloved tradition when visitors can both purchase and taste the true delicacy of Pāvilosta – the Saka River lamprey.
During the festivities, Pāvilosta will be filled with a genuine seaside atmosphere: a crafts and local producers’ market, creative workshops, seafood tastings, a knot-tying masterclass, and, of course, lamprey soup prepared in the Pāvilosta style. Meanwhile, the Pāvilosta Museum will feature the 3D exhibition “Jūriņ’ prasa smalku tīklu” (“The Sea Demands a Fine Net”).

The musical program will include a concert “Songs of Seafarers” by the band “Vilki” and Arvis Kurmis. The celebration will conclude with a dance party at the Pāvilosta Culture House, featuring the group “ELeR 2”.
Admission to the dance – 10 euros. Tickets available via “Biļešu paradīze”.
The lamprey is an exclusive delicacy, and its fishing is a long-standing cultural and historical tradition in Latvian coastal towns, including Pāvilosta, where this craft has been practiced for almost a hundred years.
During the Soviet era, the tradition was revived by one of Pāvilosta’s most active fishermen, when the delicious Saka River lamprey could be enjoyed not only by fishing families but by anyone interested – since from 1964 until the mid-1970s, Pāvilosta even had its own lamprey processing plant.
The Saka River remains the only place in South Kurzeme where lampreys are caught using traps, preserving this unique skill and tradition to this day.
